German Cockroach Information & Treatment

The German cockroach (Blattella germanica) is a small species of cockroach, measuring about 1.3 cm (0.51 in) to 1.6 cm (0.63 in) long. It can be tan through brown to almost black, and has two dark parallel streaks running from the head to the base of the wings. Although it has wings, it is unable to sustain flight.

The German cockroach is one of the most common and prominent household cockroaches in the world, and can be found throughout many human settlements. These insects are particularly fond of inhabiting restaurants, food processing facilities, hotels, and nursing homes. In colder climates, they are found only near human habitats, since they are not very tolerant to cold.

The German cockroach is originally from Asia and very common in Russia, not in Germany. It is very closely related to the Asian cockroach, and to the casual observer they appear nearly identical and may be mistaken for the other. This cockroach can be seen in the day occasionally, especially if there is a large population or if they have been disturbed. However, sightings are most commonly reported in the evening hours as they are most active at night.

The German roach is very successful at establishing an ecological niche in buildings, and is very hardy and resilient against attempts at pest control. This is because of the large number of nymphs produced from each egg case, the short period between birth and sexual maturity, and their ability to easily hide due to their small size. The mother also carries the egg case (called an ootheca) with her during the germination period, rather than depositing it like other species, a practice which would leave them vulnerable in a human habitat to zealous attempts to wipe them out.

This cockroach is also smaller than many other species so it can more easily hide and fit into very small cracks and crevices to evade humans. The German cockroach is omnivorous and a scavenger. They particularly like starch, sugary foods, grease and meats. In certain situations where there is a shortage of foodstuffs, they may eat household items such as soap, glue and toothpaste or they may even turn cannibalistic, often chewing on the wings and legs of each other.

Treatment Guidleines & Preparation Information

Sanitation is the cornerstone of effective, long lasting German cockroach control. Light infestations are common in homes although heavy, continuing infestations are usually associated with sloppy housekeeping. Food material must be eliminated as much as possible and harborage areas sealed where possible. Residual insecticides, dusts and baits and are necessary to control existing populations and to prevent their recurrence. The following is a preparation sheet outlining the necessary steps to be taken in advance of a flush out to obtain maximum effectiveness of each service.

German Cockroach Flush Out Preparation Check List.

Residents should plan on being out of the house for a minimum of (2) two hours. All pets (dogs, cats, birds, reptiles, rodents and fish) MUST be removed from premises for a minimum of (2) two hours. Fish tanks not able to be removed should be covered with a plastic covering (trash bags or plastic drop cloth) and sealed in such a way that no chemical can contaminate the water supply. Progressive Pest Control cannot be held responsible for any injury suffered buy any pet that is left inside residence. If any residents have respiratory problems or they are/may be pregnant, we suggest checking with your doctor first.

HOW TO PREPAIR FOR GERMAN ROACH FLUSH OUT:

  • Empty out ALL cupboards, ALL drawers and pantry areas.
  • All items that are moved from the kitchen cabinets are to be moved into a separate room and covered with a thick/heavy blanket or plastic drop cloth.
  • Nothing should be on the countertops or on top of or next to the refrigerator.
  • Empty EVERYTHING out of bathroom cabinets.
  • Empty everything out of any linen closets if you would like them sprayed.
  • Have everything OFF OF THE FLOOR AND SHELVES of closets you would like to be sprayed. If clothes are left hanging in the closet they may have and odor and should be washed before wearing.
  • Any areas you want sprayed must have all items removed or IT WILL NOT BE SPRAYED.
  • DO NOT SCRUB AFTER WE SPRAY! Cupboards should be wiped out with a dry cloth. Countertops should be thoroughly washed before preparing any food on them.

**ALL THE ABOVE ITEMS MUST BE DONE BEFORE THE TECHNICIAN ARRIVES**

AFTER YOUR SERVICE:

You may see roach activity for 7-10 days after the flush out is completed, THIS IS NORMAL. Any visible roaches that are sprayed directly will die instantly. During the service a flushing agent is used to lure the hidden roaches out of the cracks and crevices. If the pest does not have immediate direct contact with the pesticide, it will later walk over the residual chemical and when it next cleans its antenna, will ingest the poison and die. This is the reason you may see living roaches in the short period after the flush out. IF THE ROACH IS MOVING SLOWLY, IT IS DYING and no further treatment is needed.
