Scorpion Information & Treatment Options
Scorpions can be annoying and dangerous pests even though they are not insects. Scorpions are actually considered to be arachnids. Arachnids are eight legged creatures like spiders, ticks and mites. Some scorpions can contain a lethal sting whereas others only have one that’s about as potent as a bee sting. Although all stings are at the very least painful, if you happen to have an allergic reaction to a sting, it can very well be fatal. Do not be fooled by even the smallest scorpion, though the myth that baby scorpions are more venomous than adult scorpions is pure fiction, they still can be more poisonous because they have a chance of releasing more venom with their sting. The venom of the bark scorpion may produce severe pain, mild swelling at the site of the sting, numbness, frothing at the mouth, difficulties in breathing (including respiratory paralysis), muscle twitching, and convulsions. Death is rare, especially with advances in medical science and the fact that antivenoms are now available for severe cases. Certain people, however, may be allergic to the venom and can experience life-threatening side effects when stung, as occurs with bee stings. Infants, children and the elderly are much more at risk of severe problems from this sting but even then death is very rare. There have been no recorded deaths due to a scorpion sting in the United States since the mid-1980s.
Scorpions can easily adapt to many new environments. In our homes, we tend to leave our thermostats in the same 3 degree temperature zone between say, 76 degrees to 79 degrees. And with no rain or snow, scorpions can live a very comfortable life. Seeing one scorpion could mean your entire home is infested, as one female scorpion can give birth to 100 baby Scorpions.
Scorpions can be colored in a variety of light tans to dark browns. Some, like the Emperor Scorpion, can grow to 8 inches in length and colored black, while other scorpions grow only to hit an inch or two in length. Most scorpions are located in desert areas but are not easily seen because they hide in the shade and under rocks. Once temperatures begin to cool down and the sun begins to set, they come out to hunt for food. Scorpions love to feed on crickets, cockroaches, and silverfish, otherwise they eat just about any bug they can catch. Unlike spiders, scorpions actually consume their prey rather than suck the juices up from inside. They can also live regularly without food or water for 4 months and in hibernation, some can live as long as 7 months long without food or water.
Treatment Option #1
A scheduled Preventative Monthly Maintenance service. Progressive Pest Control utilizes various specially formulated pesticides to help in the prevention of a home scorpion infestation. Customer interaction plays a large role in prevention as well with specific tasks such as; removing harborage sites from around your home including, logs, boards, stones, bricks and other objects that can provide hiding places; keeping grass closely mowed near the home and pruning bushes and overhanging tree branches away from the structure. Tree branches can provide a direct path to the roof making extremely easy for scorpions to enter your home.
While it may not be possible to achieve full elimination of a scorpion infestation in your area with this method, a preventative monthly maintenance plan, along with Progressive's service guarantee can make a world of difference in your goal of pest free living.
Treatment Option #2
The highly successful Scorpion Exclusion Treatment. Our scorpion specialists will arrive at your home near dusk and begin with complete a power spray of the areas most likely to be a harborage for scorpions. As the temperature drops and darkness falls our technicians will then survey the area using ultraviolet black lights to locate as many scorpions as possible and trap and remove them. Scorpions will fluoresce or glow under ultraviolet light making them much more visible and easy locate with the aid of a black light. The reason they glow under a black light is because their exoskeletons have a layer of protein that illuminates when shined upon with the UV light. With this option, the population is drastically reduced with just the first treatment but it is recommended that a secondary follow up exclusion be done again within 2-4 weeks to insure maximum eradication.
With either service option, Progressive recommends a monthly pest control service to be proactive and prevent any future infestations.
